Mike Hiles

Dr. Michael Hiles is a distinguished member of the advisory board at Pavaka Wound Care, bringing decades of expertise in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine to the company. With a career dedicated to advancing medical technologies, particularly in wound care, Dr. Hiles has made significant contributions to the development of innovative therapies that enhance patient care.


Dr. Hiles earned his Ph.D. in Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology from Purdue University in 1992, following a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1989 and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a Biomedical Specialization in 1987, both from Purdue. His academic foundation in engineering and physiology has uniquely positioned him to bridge scientific research and clinical application.


His professional journey began at Purdue University’s Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center, where he served as an Associate Research Scholar and Eli Lilly Research Fellow, focusing on tissue engineering and biomaterials. In 1995, Dr. Hiles founded the Research and Development division at Cook Biotech, Inc., where he pioneered the commercialization of small intestinal submucosa (SIS) technology for medical applications. Over the next 25 years, he held progressively senior roles, including Vice President for Research, Vice President for Research & Clinical Affairs, and Senior Vice President for Research & Development and Chief Scientific Officer. In these positions, he led groundbreaking research programs and clinical studies, driving the development of extracellular matrix (ECM)-based technologies that have become integral to wound care and regenerative medicine.


Dr. Hiles’s research has focused on ECM biomaterials, which play a critical role in tissue repair and regeneration. His innovations include wound matrix devices that leverage the body’s natural healing processes. He holds over 50 U.S. patents and has authored numerous publications, including influential works on SIS in wound healing, the bioactivity of ECM scaffolds, and novel wound care products such as the OASIS Wound Matrix. His expertise in acute and chronic wound therapies directly aligns with Pavaka Wound Care’s mission.


Beyond his industry achievements, Dr. Hiles is a dedicated educator. Since 2010, he has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, teaching courses on ethics, physiology, and professionalism. He also holds an appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Purdue’s School of Veterinary Medicine, where he lectures on biomaterials and tissue engineering. His commitment to mentorship extends globally, having delivered hundreds of presentations to healthcare professionals worldwide, sharing insights on advancements in wound care and medical device technology.
